It is important to stay informed about new techniques and products available in plumbing, as well as other types of home repairs. If you understand the basics of a product or procedure, you will be better able to choose the right repair service for your needs.
Tankless water heater
Instead of using a tank, water is heated directly as it flows from the faucet. This means an endless supply of hot water. No more worrying about running out of hot water when you take your last shower. Tankless water heaters are more energy efficient than traditional water heaters. This means it’s better for the environment, and the homeowner saves on utility costs.
Hot water loop
Much like a tankless water heater, this is a system where hot water is continuously circulated through the pipes so that the water is always hot when you need it. In a traditional system, a lot of water has to circulate through the pipes until the water heater has been running long enough to be able to circulate hot water through the system.
As with a tankless water heater, you will have hot water whenever you want without having to wait, plus there will be less wasted water circulating through the pipes. It’s better for the environment and for your finances.
Smart irrigation
For years, irrigation systems have had a device that can control when, and for how long, the system runs. It’s a box (or panel) mounted on the wall that can be programmed to start at a specific time (certain days, or certain hours), and each zone of the field can also be programmed for a limited time. For example, since zone 1 is below zone 2, zone 1 can be irrigated for a shorter time because it will benefit from the runoff from zone 2. Additionally, most are equipped with a sensor that will “short circuit” the system if there has been enough rain.
There are now mobile apps that can start the system, some can even connect to the weather.
With drought areas, water conservation is a real problem. Smart irrigation technology makes this easier.
Leak detectors
Similar to smoke detectors, these devices are placed in locations where there is the greatest risk of leakage. When a leak is detected, the owner is alerted. Thus, flooding is avoided, small leaks are detected earlier, and repaired at a lower cost.
Touchless faucet
You’ve probably seen them in public restrooms. A sensor tells the faucet when to turn on. At home, these faucets are often installed in the kitchen, and in the bathroom. Obviously, the first reason is hygiene. Then comes convenience, it’s useful in homes where young children or elderly people live.
There are now a ton of gadgets and electronics out there, including smart toilets (and touchless toilets), smart showers, smart water heaters, and Bluetooth shower heads (so you can be connected to your smartphone at all times). Some of these exist simply for convenience, but many are money-saving options. If you’re thinking about upgrading, check out what’s new.
